Harissa

A very modern and very steep cable car makes it possible to reach the peak of the hill that dominates Jounieh in just a few minutes. Here stands the gigantic statue of Our Lady of Lebanon that is visible from any point on the coast. The statue was made in France and brought to Harissa in the late nineteenth century. Weighing about 13 tons, the white figure extends its open arms towards the city and the Maronite cathedral below. The church was completed in 1989 and is now flanked by an older church and the nearby Orthodox Church. The site, with its splendid panorama, is a destination of pilgrims throughout the year, but mainly at Easter when there are very teeming and picturesque processions.
